European Union at G7 Summit in Brussels on 4-5 June 2014

G7-SUMMITDue to the Russian Federation's violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, the G7 leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States as well as the European Union leaders decided to cancel their participation in the originally planned G8 Summit in Sochi, Russia and instead meet in Brussels in the G7 format. The Brussels G7 summit on 4-5 June 2014 will be hosted by the European Union. The European Union is represented by the European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President José Manuel Barroso.

At the Brussels G7 Summit leaders will discuss foreign policy issues, and in particular the situation in Ukraine and the relations with Russia, as well as the global economy and trade, energy, climate change and development.

Ahead of the summit President Van Rompuy said: "I look forward to welcoming the other G7 leaders in Brussels on 4-5 June. Ukraine will top the agenda. It will be an important moment to take stock of the latest developments in and around Ukraine and to continue to work together to meet this and other challenges of our times."

President Barroso said: "This will be a special summit, firstly because it will take place in a G7 format, secondly because we will in particular address the situation in Ukraine and finally because the summit will for the first time take place in Brussels. Recent events have once again demonstrated the importance of close co-operation between like-minded partners that share the values of freedom and democracy. We expect this summit to contribute decisively to promote these values and to reinforce a rules-based international community."
