Ukrainian forces largely in control of key road in the east, says Kyiv
Ukrainian troops have a large control of a crucial road linking two Russian-occupied areas in the east of Ukraine, pro-Kyiv officials stated on Friday (28 October).
After capturing large areas of territory in a lighting attack, Ukrainian forces are slowly moving eastward into the Luhansk area and aiming to seize the Russian-occupied towns Svatove (located 45 km (28 mi) south of Svatove). These towns are the main settlements in the same districts.
The armed forces of Ukraine have taken control of virtually all roads from Svatove and Kreminna. "Our soldiers are moving daily," Serhiy Gaidai, governor in Luhansk, stated to national television.
On Wednesday (26 October), a Russian-backed separatist official reported heavy fighting in the Kreminna/Svatove districts. These areas have been at the frontline ever since Russian troops were driven from the Kharkiv region by Ukrainian forces in September.
Separately, the military intelligence directorate of Ukraine claimed that its agents had taken over Nevske, along with regular troops, on Sunday killing 34 Russians. Nevske lies 10km (6 miles) west on the road that links Svatove to Kreminna.
The daily report of the general staff of Ukrainian armed forces did not mention Svatove nor Kreminna in its daily report. Facebook posted an update that said Russian forces had attacked dozens of targets along a large portion of the front line.
