MEPs to debate recommendations for TTIP talks
The international trade committee on Wednesday (21 January) debates the talks on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). European Parliament will make recommendations to the European Commission based on its assessment of the main results of the talks launched 18 months ago. It will suggest adjustments, in the light of the new political players following elections and new concerns of EU civil society.
The debate in the trade committee, which is the lead committee, starts at 16.20. Ten other committees will deliver opinions on the TTIP talks which will feed into the final recommendations being drawn up by trade committee chair Bernd Lange (S&D, DE). A number of them start their discussions this week. These are the development committee (Wednesday, at 9h30), the environment committee (Wednesday at 10h30), the industry and energy committee (Wednesday, at 16h), the agriculture committee (Wednesday, at 17h30) and the civil liberties committee (Thursday, at 17.15).
The House plans to adopt its recommendations in May this year. The TTIP agreement has to be ratified by the European Parliament before it can enter into force.
