Since the UK voted to leave the European Union, the European University Association (EUA) has assigned a team of experts to gather evidence regarding the possible outcomes of Brexit for European research programmes and higher education. On 9 September, EUA published a short factsheet, After the Brexit Referendum: Possible outcomes for Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+, on the possible status of UK universities in a post-Brexit scenario, particularly regarding participation in these programmes. 

This factsheet contains an overview of the current state of play, the procedural aspects of Brexit, and is intended to shed some light on the different options and possibilities within the EU system to find a new relation that could allow the UK to continue as an integral part of the family of European universities.

EUA is very concerned about the insecurity that Brexit causes, notably with regard to the participation of British universities in the EU funding programmes as well as the long-term consequences for European cooperation in research and education. With this factsheet, which is relevant for all universities, EUA hopes to help clarify the situation to the extent possible at the moment.

EUA stresses, and will continue to stress that UK universities will remain part of the family of European universities, which goes beyond EU borders, and it will continue to advocate for cooperation in research and education in the interest of the entire European higher education community. The EUA team of experts dedicated to this topic will continue to actively monitor the ongoing discussions and developments.
