20160912pht42212_width_600The State of the European Union, one of the year’s most important debates, begins on Wednesday 14 September at 9h CET. It’s an opportunity to find out what direction the EU will take in the coming year and what could have been done better. Find out the many ways to follow the debate online and how you can join the discussion on social media.

The annual State of the Union debate is a chance for MEPs to scrutinise the work and the plans of the European Commission and help set the future for the EU. In the wake of Brexit, the migration crisis and the terrorist threats, this week’s debate is more important than ever.

The event starts off with a speech by Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker evaluating the past year as well as setting out plans for the coming year. This is followed by a heated debate by MEPs defending what they believe should be the EU’s priorities. Their proposals vary from a greater role for the EU to keeping the Union as it is but making it more efficient or even to pulling the plug on the European project altogether.
