European Jewish Press news website attacked by Turkish hackers
The news website of the European Jewish Press, the sole Jewish news agency in Europe, was hacked on 29 January, presumably by Turkish hackers.
Visitors to the news agency's website were greeted by a mushroom coloured with the Turkish flag on the home page, with oriental music playing in the background. EJP had published a story about American actress Scarlet Johansson’s defence of Israeli company SodaStream when the hacking took place.
The message in Turkish language that appeared exhorted "revenge for Turkistan, Palestine, Syria and Egypt". It also stated: "Do not try to test the power of the Turks!’’
Responsibility for the hacking was claimed on the homepage by the so-called Atomaker & Hasturk group.
European Jewish Press Editor-in-Chief Yossi Lempkowicz said: "This is not the first time a Jewish site has been attacked by hackers on the internet. This is clearly an attempt to silence a Jewish information site.’’
At around 20h on 29 January, the site was still displaying the hackers’ message.
The technical team of the information news website worked to regain control of the site. "We 're working to restore our site as quickly as possible. We will tirelessly continue our mission to disseminate information to our readers worldwide despite this attack and attempt to silent and boycott us,’’ Lempkowicz added.
