Parliament will discuss the European Commission’s work during the State of the EU debate and vote on issues ranging from Afghanistan to health during September's plenary session, EU affairs.

MEPs will scrutinize the work of the Commission, making sure that Europeans' concerns are being addressed during the State of the European Union debate with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Wednesday. They will look at the Commission’s work in the past year - including the COVID-19 response and economic recovery - and the EC’s plans and vision for the future. Find out how to follow the debate.

Today (14 September), MEPs will discuss how to best respond to the humanitarian and migration crisis in Afghanistan, following the Taliban’s return to power after the withdrawal of US troops, with Foreign Policy Commissioner Josep Borrell. MEPs will vote on a resolution on Thursday.

Today, Parliament will debate Parliament’s recommendations about the future of EU-Russia relations, calling for a review of EU policies in light of increasing tensions.

MEPs will vote on the reform of the European Blue Card for highly-qualified workers on Wednesday. The new rules - improving worker’s rights and increasing flexibility - should make it easier for employers in EU countries to hire people from other countries and attract more highly-skilled migrants.

MEPs will debate and vote on laws to strengthen the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and better tackle international health threats, by further extending the centre's mandate and improving international and EU coordination to reinforce crisis prevention.

On Wednesday (15 September), MEPs are set to adopt the Brexit Adjustment Reserve - a €5 billion EU fund to help people, companies and countries mitigate the social and economic impact of the UK's withdrawal from the EU.

Parliament will also vote on a resolution to end the use of animals in research and testing, debated during July’s plenary session. They will present ways to transition to a research system that does not use animals.

On Wednesday, MEPs will assess the threat to media freedom in Poland following new broadcasting legislation and continued breaches of rule of law.
