Serbian parliament appoints new government
On Wednesday (26 October), the Serbian parliament elected a new government whose priorities are investment in energy infrastructure as well as membership in EU.
Ana Brnabic, who was also the prime minister during the previous terms, will lead the new Cabinet.
It will include 28 ministers, mostly from the conservative Serbian Progressive Party and its ally, the Socialists.
The government was supported by one hundred fifty-seven of the 250-seat parliament deputies. Opposition deputies voted against the new Cabinet in a debate. They said that the government was too large and costly.
Brnabic, in her Wednesday address to parliament, stated that the government intends to invest €12 billion in energy projects including pipelines for oil and power generation.
She stated that the country's "strategic destination" was also the European Union.
Serbia, a candidate country for the EU, must resume relations with Kosovo, its former south province, and align its foreign policy with the bloc if it is to join.
Serbia condemned Russia's invasion in Ukraine at the United Nations but refused to join sanctions against Moscow despite EU officials asking Serbia to do so.
