Spain reports second monkeypox-related death in Europe
Spain reported its second monkeypox-related fatality on Saturday. This is Europe's second and only third deaths from the disease, as well as the third outside Africa during the current outbreak.
Spain reported its first death on Friday, just after Brazil had reported the first monkeypox-related deaths outside of Africa in the current outbreak.
A World Health Organization report dated July 22 states that only five deaths were reported. All of them occurred in Africa. Last Saturday, the WHO declared the rapidly spreading epidemic a global emergency of health, its highest level.
According to the Spanish Health Ministry's latest report, 4,298 cases were confirmed in Spain. It said 120, or 3.2%, of the 3,750 patients it had information on had been admitted to hospital, and two had died.
According to local media, the first death was in the northeastern Valencia area. It was caused by encephalitis, an inflammation and brain swelling that is associated with the infection.
