The curtain is set to rise on a major international event that will showcase the best of Kazakhstan.Well over one million tickets have been sold for EXPO 2017 that will take place in Astana, the country’s capital, from 10 June to 10 September.

It promises to be a truly global event: Chinese President Xi Jinping will participate along with Swiss President Doris Leutard and other heads of state. The Mayors of 26 cities will also attend.

Over 100 countries and more than 10 international organizations will take part.

It is thought that 85% of the total number of visitors will be citizens of Kazakhstan, and 15% – foreign nationals, most of which will come from the CIS countries and China. A significant number of tourists is also expected to arrive from Europe, Turkey, and the United States.

Тhe subject of EXPO-2017 is “Future Energy” and Astana aims to showcase the country’s environmental efforts to the world.”. It reflects the preoccupation of the international community with the problem of energy consumption, which is having an increasing impact on our planet. The main objective of the exhibition is to call for responsibility, to foster a discussion and to develop knowledge enabling people to plan and control energy consumption on our planet and to minimize damage to the environment.

Astana was chosen to host the event on November 22, 2012 in a secret ballot of representatives of 161 states. It has become a truly national project, in which all regions of the country will take part.

The event is, in face, expected to attract over 4m people over the three months.

Akhmetzhan Yessimov,  the former Mayor of Almaty and director of EXPO-2017, declared: “We have witnessed the enormous interest of the Kazakhstani in EXPO and are confident we can organize this epic event at the highest level. Though the exhibition is international and specialized it must first of all yield benefit to the people of Kazakhstan.”

Visitors will get a chance to see for themselves the very latest developments in green energy as well as enjoying a rich cultural and entertainment programme.

One key aim has been to ensure that the Expo 2017 infrastructure is fully utilized when the event concludes and Kazakhstan is working on the long-term establishment of an International Financial Centre and a Centre for Transfer of Green Technologies in Astana in some of the Expo buildings. The official launch date for the financial centre is January 1, 2018. It is being modelled on Dubai’s financial centre.

Under the “Future Energy” banner, the event will be able to attract the best energy-saving technologies and new projects of applying alternative sources of energy.

Global policy documents will also be drafted in order to promote an energy-efficient lifestyle and wide use of renewable energy sources.

Expo 2017 aims to generate global discussion and develop knowledge to help control energy consumption and minimize damage to the environment.

Ukraine, for example, is getting ready to present its achievements in the field of energy efficiency as well as cultural and technical developments in Astana.

World expos traditionally have broad themes intended to raise awareness of and find responses to universal challenges of our time.

Each participating country will get a chance to showcase itself in various “pavilions.”

For example, electricity powered from a racing car will be presented at the pavilion of Germany while the Czech Republic will present its revolutionary technologies.

Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, says it will present high tech projects in its pavilion.

The Kazakh pavilion is split into two zones, including one that highlights “creative energy” in the field of energy and environmental protection. Another zone will showcase projects of Kazakh scientists and organisations. The management of thermonuclear fusion will also come under the spotlight in the home nation’s exhibition.

The Expo comes after some five years of preparation.  Officially called an International Specialized Expo as designated by the Bureau of International Expositions, or BIE (more colloquially known as a world’s fair), it also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

On the cultural side, the chorus and symphony orchestra of the legendary Milanese Teatro alla Scala will perform in September at the Astana Opera House while the world-famous Cirque du Soleil will also perform.

Visitors will have an opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of national cuisines, including exotic ones – from European to Angolan.

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said, “The exhibition will demonstrate to the world the community achievements of an independent Kazakhstan.”

Looking to the future, he said, “There are 2,700 foreign companies working in Astana. They invested about 3.2 billion US dollars in the city’s economy.”

He added, “At the same time, the existing opportunities are not fully used.”
