Frontex and #Poland sign the headquarters agreement

poland headquartersToday (9 March), Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, and the Polish government signed the headquarters agreement, which defines the legal status for the agency and its employees in Poland. The agreement will also allow Frontex to build its new headquarters in Warsaw on land provided by the Polish government.
“The signing of the headquarters agreement with Poland is key for the development of our agency. This means that Frontex will grow in the coming years with the certainty about its future here in Poland. This includes a settled legal status for the agency and its employees, whose children will be able to attend an accredited European school which will be set up in Warsaw,” said Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri.
“I am grateful to the Polish authorities for all the hard work they put into reaching this agreement. I’m certain that hosting one of the largest EU agencies on its soil will help promote Warsaw and Poland around Europe and provide new economic opportunities for local businesses,” he added.
The headquarters agreement will be now submitted for ratification by the Polish parliament.
Frontex, which has been coordinating the operational cooperation of EU member states at the external borders for more than a decade, became the European Border and Coast Guard Agency in October 2016. With the expansion of its role and activities, the agency plans to increase its staffing from the current level of about 400 to 600 by the end of this year and 1,000 in 2020.
